How to study smarter?!

Here are some tips and strategies for studying. You don't have to study harder, study smarter.
Here are some tips and strategies for studying. You don't have to study harder, study smarter.

While school is supposed to be the best time of your life, studying can be hard to crack. It’s more than keeping up with reading and writing papers. It takes daily dedication and focus to get the best grades possible. Yes, you can absolutely have fun while at college, but don’t forget that the real reason you are there is to study

1. Index Cards

Index cards are definitely a school staple. And while they may have been used for simple flashcards in the past, the uses of index cards are pretty limitless. One way to get the most out of index cards is to outline each section of a textbook on one index card. By the end of the chapter, you’ll have easy to read and easy to digest outlines of the text that you can flip through. You can also use index cards as a tangible planner. Use one index card for each day. Write the date on the top of each card and then record what you need to do each day on the card (ex. “read chapter one, answer math questions 1-20, write 2 pages of essay).

2. iPad

A tablet can seem like a luxury piece at college and while you could use it to binge watch the latest Netflix series, there are ways you can use it for studying. You can download apps that assist in studying, use it to read digital textbooks, and even to watch Youtube videos guiding you through difficult math problems.

3. Tape Recorder

If you find yourself unable to keep up with note-taking, use a tape recorder to record lectures (with the professor’s permission). Make sure that you go through each recording after class, within a day or two, so you can type up notes. Save the files so you can re-review when exam time rolls around!

4. Printer

So much classwork is now online, but I find that studying with tangible paper works a lot better. Print out handouts so you can take notes on it, highlight things you don’t understand, and work through problems by hand. Be green by printing on the back of old handouts!

5. Highlighters

Don’t go crazy with highlighters, otherwise it doesn’t do any good. Highlight sparingly and consider color-coding in a smart, effective way. You can even use highlighters to differentiate between different homework for classes in your planner.

6. Bulletin Board

Hang a bulletin board in your dorm so you can post all the index cards from #1 with your homework assignments. Bulletin boards are ideal because you can pin up different things and easily take something down and replace. It can relieve anxiety and make your workload feel way more doable.

7. Whiteboard Markers

When you’re outlining a complicated paper or working through difficult math problems, whiteboards are an amazing solution. You can easily erase and revise as you’re working through it! Then you can take a step back and see what you’ve done… and erase and start over for the next!

8. Timer

Seems like it should be something in the kitchen, but you should really keep a timer in your dorm room! You can use the timer as a study tool. For example, you could set it as your reading timer and take a break when it goes off. Or you can use the timer to help keep your technology addiction at bay!

9. Agenda

A good old fashioned planner will help you stay organized. You never want to miss a deadline or exam!

10. Computer

A computer can be a major distraction, but it obviously can be useful to study. Be smart about your computer use. Turn off the wifi while writing a paper. Only keep tabs open with things that are helping you study (no Facebook!). Find a word document program that you especially like for taking notes during class.
